Health and legislative challenges for oyster farmers in France

Faced with health and regulatory challenges, COLDEP offers with its VAL AQUA system a sustainable and eco-efficient solution for oyster farmers in France.

Oyster farmers in France are facing increasing challenges related to water quality and strict legislative requirements concerning the health safety of shellfish. These constraints, while essential to ensure products that are safe for consumption, weigh on production costs and farm profitability. It is in this context that COLDEP offers its innovative solution, the VAL AQUA system, to meet the specific needs of shellfish farmers while respecting legal and health standards.

The legislative context and challenges for farmers

In France, the production of oysters and shellfish is regulated by European and national standards that aim to guarantee consumer safety. In particular, European Directive 91/492/EEC imposes strict criteria for the classification of shellfish production areas. These areas are classified according to the levels of microbiological contamination, mainly by measuring the levels ofEscherichia coli, an indicator of faecal pollution:

  • Area A : shellfish can be sold directly without treatment.
  • Area B : they must undergo a purification process before being marketed.
  • Area C : prolonged purification or re-immersion in a clean area is necessary before consumption.

IFREMER has made a memo that recalls the key points to remember in terms of regulations.

Farmers must not only constantly monitor the quality of the water in their production sites, but also comply with the standards imposed by these classifications, otherwise production areas will be temporarily or permanently closed. In addition, the quality of marine waters is often affected by external pollution sources, such as agricultural and industrial discharges, further complicating the task of producers. These obligations lead to additional costs, in particular for purification infrastructures and water treatments.

The technical challenges of modern oyster farms

Oyster farms in France are facing increased pressure to ensure high quality water, which is essential for shellfish growth and health. The presence of contaminants, whether microbial, chemical, or particulate, can have devastating effects on stocks. In addition, there is the challenge of pathogen management, which not only affect the quality of the final product, but also the biosecurity of farms.

In parallel, conventional purification systems can be expensive in terms of energy and consumables (chemical reagents for coagulation-flocculation). Treatment must also adapt to seasonal fluctuations in volumes and types of pollution, making traditional systems rigid and often ineffective in the long term.

VAL AQUA: an innovative solution for oyster farmers

Faced with these challenges, COLDEP proposes a revolutionary solution: the system VAL AQUA, a patented water treatment process based on vacuum flotation. This multi-functional system ensures not only the purification of water, but also the management of dissolved gases and fine particles in a unique, robust and energy-efficient device.

Key features of the VAL AQUA system

The VAL AQUA system is distinguished by its ability to combine several essential functions in a single compact unit:

  • Gas exchange : the system extracts unwanted dissolved gases (such as CO2, N2, and H2S) while replenishing the water with oxygen. This process is critical to maintaining a healthy environment for oysters, which depend on well-oxygenated water for growth and survival.
  • Extraction of particles : the process uses vacuum flotation to capture and eliminate fine particles as well as pathogens, thus reducing the risk of diseases in breeding tanks.
  • Water circulation : in addition to purifying the water, the system ensures continuous circulation, which is essential for maintaining optimal conditions in the pools.

One of the major advantages of this technology is its ability to operate without additional chemicals, thus reducing environmental impact and simplifying effluent management. The system operates in a fully automated manner, minimizing human intervention and reducing operating costs while increasing reliability.

A concrete impact for shellfish farmers

For oyster farmers, the adoption of the VAL AQUA system results in several concrete benefits:

  1. Reduced energy costs : thanks to the energy efficiency of vacuum flotation, the costs associated with water purification are reduced compared to traditional systems.
  2. Improving biosafety : by extracting pathogens and fine particles, the system contributes to creating a safer environment for oysters, thus reducing the risk of contamination.
  3. Compliance with health standards : the system maintains water quality that meets regulatory requirements, thus ensuring that oysters can be marketed without risk for consumers.
  4. Ease of integration : the system is designed to be easily integrated into existing infrastructures, with a minimum of necessary adaptations. It can be used both for recirculating breeding tanks and for open systems.

A sustainable vision for aquaculture

By integrating VAL AQUA systems, oyster farmers in France can not only meet legal requirements, but also significantly improve the profitability of their farms. With more than 150 installations around the world, COLDEP continues to prove the effectiveness of its technology in various aquaculture environments, ranging from fish farming to shellfish farming.

COLDEP's mission is clear: to provide sustainable and innovative solutions for contemporary aquaculture challenges, while guaranteeing clean and secure water for all. The VAL AQUA system is a perfect example, combining performance, sustainability and ease of use to meet the pressing needs of oyster farmers in France.

Water quality management is becoming a key success factor. With the VAL AQUA system, COLDEP offers an integrated solution that not only improves the productivity and safety of farms, but also contributes to the preservation of the environment. Faced with health and legislative challenges, VAL AQUA is establishing itself as an essential technology for shellfish farmers in France and around the world.
